What If My Baby Doesn’t Sit Still? A Calm Approach to Celebrating Turning One

What If My Baby Doesn’t Sit Still? A Calm Approach to Celebrating Turning One

“I’d love to celebrate my baby turning one, but they never sit still. Will we actually get anything lovely?”

If your baby is approaching their first birthday and this thought has crossed your mind, you’re certainly not alone.

At around one, babies are busy.

They crawl. They shuffle. They pull themselves up. They investigate everything within reach. They change their mind approximately three seconds after you thought you knew what they wanted.

And some simply have no interest whatsoever in sitting neatly where we put them.

The lovely thing is, they don’t need to.

Your baby’s First Birthday Transformational Experience isn’t about getting them to behave perfectly for the camera.

It’s about celebrating who they are at one.

And sometimes, the wriggliest little personalities give us the most joyful stories to tell.

Your Baby Isn't Supposed to Sit Still

There can be an expectation around first birthday portraits that your baby needs to sit beautifully, smile at exactly the right moment and somehow cooperate with everything happening around them.

But think about the little person you’ve spent the last year getting to know.

Would that really represent them?

Perhaps your baby is happiest crawling towards something interesting.

Maybe they’ve just discovered standing and want to practise at every possible opportunity.

Perhaps they’re cautious in unfamiliar surroundings and need time close to you before they’re ready to explore.

Or maybe they’re the baby who arrives and immediately wants to investigate everything.

None of those things are problems to solve.

They’re part of who your baby is right now.

We Follow Your Baby's Pace

This is one of the reasons our approach is calm and unhurried.

Your baby isn’t expected to arrive and immediately do something on command.

They have time to settle.

Time to look around.

Time to stay close to you if that’s what they need.

And time to explore when they’re ready.

Rather than expecting your baby to fit around a rigid plan, we gently adapt the experience around them, so you can celebrate your baby’s first birthday without it feeling overwhelming.

If they want to sit, wonderful.

If they want to crawl, we’ll work with that.

If standing is their newest and most exciting achievement, that’s worth celebrating too.

Your baby doesn’t have to perform for us.

They just get to be themselves.

What If My Baby Doesn't Smile?

This is another worry I hear from parents.

And again, there is no requirement for a permanent smile.

Your baby’s thoughtful expressions, curious looks, little frowns and moments of concentration are part of their personality too.

Of course, we’ll create opportunities for those wonderful smiles and giggles to appear naturally.

But the aim isn’t to produce a collection where every expression looks exactly the same.

It’s to create something that feels like your baby.

The expressions you recognise.

The personality you’ve fallen completely in love with.

The little face that makes you think, yes — that’s them.

You Don't Need to Worry About Getting Them to Cooperate

This is an important one for mums in particular.

You already spend so much of your day anticipating what your baby needs.

You don’t need another experience where you’re responsible for making everything go according to plan.

You don’t need to spend the whole time saying:

“Sit there.”

“Look this way.”

“Come back.”

“Smile for Mummy.”

That’s our job to gently guide.

Your job is to enjoy your baby.

That’s why our First Birthday Transformational Experiences are designed to feel relaxed and personal. We take our cues from your little one while guiding you through what happens next.

For families travelling to us from across Hampshire and Surrey, that means you don’t need to arrive worrying whether your baby is going to be “good”.

There is no good or bad.

There is simply your baby being one.

Sometimes Movement Tells the Story Best

Imagine looking at your artwork several years from now.

Would you rather remember a perfectly still version of your baby that didn’t really exist?

Or the determined little crawler who couldn’t wait to get somewhere?

The new walker who was enormously proud of themselves?

The baby who kept reaching for the balloons?

The infectious laugh when something unexpected happened?

Those details matter because they belong to this exact stage.

In our previous Moore & Moore Journal article about what to do before your baby turns one, I talked about noticing who your baby is right now.

This is where that becomes especially meaningful.

We’re not trying to remove their personality from the experience.

We’re celebrating it.

And Then There's the Cake…

If you’re choosing our Full First Birthday Transformational Experience, the cake celebration gives your baby another opportunity simply to explore.

Some babies dive straight in.

Some delicately investigate one tiny bit at a time.

Some are far more interested in everything surrounding the cake.

And occasionally a baby looks at the whole situation as though the adults have made a very questionable decision.

That’s all part of the fun.

There’s no correct reaction we’re waiting for.

And afterwards, the bath-time finale gives your little one another chance to play, splash and simply enjoy themselves.

It’s a celebration, not a performance.

What If They're Having a Difficult Day?

Babies are babies.

They get tired. They need cuddles. They have hungry moments and uncertain moments.

A calm experience leaves room for that.

If your baby needs reassurance from you, they can have it.

In fact, those moments of connection between you can sometimes become incredibly meaningful in their own right.

Because your baby’s first birthday isn’t only about what they can do at one.

It’s about the relationship you’ve built together during their first year.

The person they reach for.

The arms where they feel safe.

You are part of their story too.

Your Baby Is Already Enough

Perhaps that’s the most important thing I can tell you if you’re worrying about whether your baby will sit still.

They don’t need to do anything differently.

They don’t need to be calmer.

They don’t need to smile more.

They don’t need to cooperate perfectly.

They don’t need to become somebody else’s idea of what a one-year-old should look like.

The little person you’ve spent the last year loving is already enough.

Our job is simply to help you see and celebrate them.

And when that artwork eventually lives in your home, I want you to look at it and recognise your baby immediately — their personality, their joy and all those little characteristics you knew so well at one.

One day, they’ll see it too.

And they’ll see a child who was celebrated exactly as they were.

If your baby’s first birthday is approaching and you’re thinking, “I’d love to do this, but mine will never sit still,” please don’t let that worry stop you.
