Make a Statement with a Stunning Prom Dress

Want to look stunning on prom night, but not sure where to begin?

Your dress should not only look stunning, it should also feel wonderful to wear – and you’ll want to be able to glide around the dance floor in it.

Finding the right dress can be a challenge. That’s why we’ve put together a few tips to help you make the most of your big night.

Fix a budget in advance

First of all, decide how much you want to spend – and stick to it. Remember, you may have to buy accessories as well.

Before you buy, do some research online and in store to figure out what’s a reasonable amount to spend. Having a fixed budget in mind will enable you to focus. Dismissing anything too expensive helps to narrow down the field.

And don’t get carried away. You don’t want to spend a fortune on a dress you’re unlikely to wear again. But if you think you’ll get plenty of wear out of it, then it’s worth spending a bit more.

Dress to suit your body shape

When choosing a dress, you should think about how it’s going to suit your body shape.

For instance, if you have an hourglass figure, try a sleeveless or mermaid dress. Low necklines and tight bodices look great on hourglass figures while long flowing skirts or trains are also becoming on this body type.

If you’re a pear shape, you can also wear form-fitting bodice dresses that accentuate your top half or opt for a long or short skirted A-line dress. Apple shapes can also choose dresses that concentrate on the bust area – strapless or halter dresses are ideal with a full or knee length skirt.

If you have narrow hips but a broader upper body, then A-line dresses or ball gowns will suit this body type. You can also carry off a daring split skirt that highlights your slim lower half.

Be different, go retro

If you can’t find anything you like in the chain or department stores, or you’d simply prefer something a little more unique, why not look for a retro dress?

Is there a particular era that appeals to you such as twenties flapper girl or sixties hippy chic? Try searching for a style from your chosen decade in charity shops and specialist retro dress shops. Or go online and check out what dresses are for sale on eBay.

Think about your accessories

Finding accessories that complement your prom dress without overshadowing it is key to completing ‘the look’. Your shoes and handbag need to act as the perfect foil for your dress.

If you’re having trouble finding what you want in your usual shops, try visiting bridal stores. Wedding shops will often have pieces of jewellery or silk shoes that you won’t find elsewhere. Many will also be able to dye the shoes you like so that they match your dress.
